Area Rug spring cleaning tips

When the weather starts to get warmer, one of first things that come to mind is spring-cleaning. Although regular household maintenance may be something we do year-round, spring tends to be a time where we take inventory of our living space and give our carpets, floors, household fixtures, furnishings and upholstery a thorough cleaning that goes beyond surface appearances. Whether you live in Los Angeles or New York City, keeping a clean home can become an arduous task; however, with the proper tools and an organized to-do list, you can cut your cleaning time in half. So when you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, get out the heavy cleaning artillery and open up your windows to let in some fresh air, read on for some helpful spring-cleaning tips:

  • Step One: Depending on what room you’re cleaning, you’ll want to do a quick visual sweep and determine what items are extraneous – i.e., things that don’t belong in that particular part of your home. For example, if you’re cleaning your living room and you come across shoes laying on an area rug or clothes draped across a chair, gather these items up and put them aside to be returned to their proper place. Once you’ve cleared the room of clutter, it will be that much easier to begin the cleaning process.
  • TIP: Use a laundry basket to collect items that are ‘out of place’ in your home – stashing them in the basket makes it that much easier to round things up and put them away quickly and efficiently.
  • Step Two: Once you have straightened up the desired room and prepared it for cleaning, you will want to focus on the walls and ceiling. Remove cobwebs from the corners of your room with a broom, and if you have ceiling fans, use a ladder or step-stool and clean the blades with your choice of cleanser and paper towels. For high-traffic areas (such as doors, doorknobs, switch plates and hallways), spot-treat soiled areas with a warm soapy solution and a soft cloth or sponge.
  • TIP: For air vents, it’s best to leave it to the experts – you may want to contact a professional air duct cleaning service to make certain the job is done right.
  • Step Three: After you’ve tackled the walls and ceilings, you’ll want to give your furniture, knick-knacks and other hard surfaces a good dusting and polishing. For wood furnishings, a dust cloth and furniture polish is sufficient; if you are looking for a deeper sheen, you may use furniture waxes and other products especially formulated for the job. For glass, porcelain or acrylic surfaces, read the cleaning product labels carefully to ensure they’re safe for the surface you’re attempting to clean. Never use abrasive cleansers or objects (such as steel wool) that may scratch or damage the fixture.
  • TIP: If your leather or upholstered furnishings require a cleaning that goes beyond dusting and vacuuming, a leather and upholstery cleaning specialist in your area may be able to assist you with your maintenance needs.
  • Step Four: Now that you’ve cleaned the walls, surfaces and furnishings of your room, you’ll want to focus your attention on the floors. Whether you have wood floors, tiled floors, carpeting or area rugs, a thorough vacuuming is in order to remove any surface debris. Next, spot-treat any soiled areas on your carpet or area rug. For particularly stubborn stains, you may prefer to trust your area rugs and carpeting to a carpet cleaning service.
  • TIP: If you choose to use a store-bought carpet cleaning solution, be sure to read the label carefully to avoid bleaching or discoloration.
